Erich “Bud” Meyer, Jr., 79, Stendal

Erich “Bud” Meyer, Jr., 79, of Stendal, died Tuesday, June 21, at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper of injuries suffered in a farming accident. He was born in Stendal February 12, 1943, to Erich and Ola (Henke) Meyer. He married Linda Leingang April 16, 1966, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. She died March 23, 1944. He married Sherry Gillespie June 10, 2000, at St. Peter’s Church.

Bud ran the family farm since the age of 15 following the loss of his father. He was a 1961 graduate of Stendal High School. He worked as a mechanic at Struckman Chevrolet and Cecil Kaiser’s and was a United Mine Worker for 39 years, working for Old Ben No. 1 operating the Big Kate drag line. He was a lifetime member of St. Peter’s Church and served in a number of leadership roles. He loved spending time with his extended family and also loved to “rescue” old tractors and collected over 80 IH Farmall tractors.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Meyer; two daughters, Dana Hopf and husband Dr. Steve Hopf, Jasper, and Melody Kinker and husband Paul, Stendal; two stepdaughters, Trina Bryam and husband Kirk and Tally Sokeland and husband Josh; one stepson, Clint Coleman and wife Krista; three sisters, Eunice Butke, Hazel Katter, and Inza Dedrick; five grandchildren with Linda, Erich, Melinda, and Mary Kate Hopf and Emma and Owen Kinker; and 10 grandchildren with Sherry, Kailyn, Hailee, Logan, Saige, Gabe, Sofia, Jax, Quin, Knox, and Bella.

In addition to his parents and first wife he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Melinda, one grandson, Daniel Hopf, and three brothers-in-law, Rueben Butke, Rod Katter, and Eldon Dedrick.

Funeral services at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery. Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg is in charge of arrangements.
