I. Ray Atkins, 77, Birdseye
I. Ray Atkins, 77, of Birdseye, died Friday, September 10, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in Eckerty March 17, 1944, to John Lloyd and Bertha Cloe (Flick) Atkins.
Ray worked in furniture manufacturing and retired from the Indiana Department of Transportation. He was a member of Bethlehem Masonic Lodge #574 F&AM and served as its past Master, Order of the Eastern Star #590, and was a founding member of the Birdseye Fire Department and served for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene (Craig) Atkins; two sons, Harold Gordon Atkins and wife Bev, St. Anthony, and Bryan Atkins, Birdseye; one daughter, Priscilla Rickelman and husband Keith, Mariah Hill; five sisters, Ruby Lane and husband Bob, Kathy Hoffman and husband Mike, and Jayne Wininger and husband Steve, all of Birdseye, Lou Ellen Buening, Ferdinand, and Deby Caldemeyer and husband Larry, Lynnville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters, Viva Good, Judy Murray, and Marie Hammond, one brother, Kenneth Atkins, who died in infancy, one daughter-in-law, Jacqueline “Jackie” Atkins, and one brother-in-law, Earl “Pat” Buening.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg. The Birdseye Fire Department, in conjunction with the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter’s Association, will conduct a memorial service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home followed by a Masonic memorial service at 7 p.m., conducted by the Bethlehem Masonic Lodge #574 F&AM.
