James J. Meyer, 89, Huntingburg

James J. Meyer, 89, of Huntingburg, died Wednesday, July 28, at his home. He was born in Mariah Hill March 22, 1932, to Edward and Clara (Bredhold) Meyer. He married Mildred I. Armstrong August 10, 1957, at the St. Meinrad Archabbey Church. She died April 20, 2011.

James worked as a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier with the St. Meinrad Post Office for 42 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg, Holland American Legion Post 343, and Huntingburg VFW Post 2366 for 70 years.

He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Benson and companion Howard Neal, Huntingburg, Charmaine McDowell and husband Tom, Evansville, and Audrey Hartloff, Holland; one son, Richard Meyer and wife Michelle, Huntingburg; six grandchildren, Dawn Werne and husband Jeremiah, Tasha Cox and husband Kyle, Dustin Benson and wife Krysie, Lara Aikman and husband Robbie, and Cora and Paige Meyer; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Bill Hartloff and Chuck Benson, four brothers, Renus, Melvin, Elmer, and Harold Meyer, one sister, Estella Meyer, and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg. Online condolences can be shared at www.nassandson.com. Funeral services at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Church with burial following in the church cemetery. The funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Biju Thomas. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 2366 memorial detail.
