Richard J. “Butch” Schmitt, 91, Ireland
Richard J. “Butch” Schmitt, 91, of Ireland, died Thursday, July 22, at his home. He was born in Ireland January 19, 1930, to Joseph and Anna (Stenftenagel) Schmitt. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Hoffman February 27, 1954, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Schnellville.
Butch was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Jasper Cabinet Company where he worked for a number of years and was a turkey farmer. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland, the Ireland Knights of Columbus, the Ireland Sportsman Club, and the Jasper German Club. He enjoyed gardening, raising pecan trees, gathering and shelling the pecans, dancing, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Schmitt; two sons, Dan Schmitt, Jasper, and Myron Schmitt and wife Shelly, Ireland; four daughters, Betty Schmitt, Ireland, Diane Schmitt, Jasper, Mary Oldham, Mason, Ohio, Teri Wolfe and husband Robert, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Kelli Revelle and husband Dale, Festus, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Bridget Schmitt, one son-in-law, Mick Oldham, three sisters, Bertha Brames, Caroline Wagner, and Anna Mae Wagner, and six brothers, Anthony, Urban, Othmar, Ralph, Linus, and Leo Schmitt.
Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Church. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary Church or to the American Alzheimer’s Association. American Legion Post 147 will conduct military graveside rites.
