Melba Sarah Prusz, 98, Holland
Melba Sarah Prusz, 98, of Holland, died Friday, June 11, at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born in Holland April 18, 1923, to Wilbur and Anna Elizabeth (Katterhenry) Hemmer. She married Lloyd Edward Prusz November 28, 1947. He died March 13, 2006.
Melba was a 1941 graduate of Holland High School. She attended beauty school in Evansville and opened her own beauty shop in Holland. In 1947 she closed her shop to become a fulltime wife and mother. She loved her flowers, gardening, and birdwatching, was a well-known cook and baker, best-known for her strip coffee cakes. She enjoyed painting ceramics and firing them in her own kiln, crewel, cross-stitch, embroidery, and needlepoint. She made quilts for each of her children for their weddings and for each grandchild to take to college. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Holland where she taught Sunday school and Bethel Bible classes, was secretary for the Ladies Mission Society, a member of WE:CA, and sang in the choir.
She is survived by three daughters, Martha Krohn, Princeton, Janet Townsend and husband Stu, Huntingburg, and Carol Leistner and husband Ron, Holland; one son, Don Prusz and wife Sara, Holland; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Kemp and Odelia Thermond, one son-in-law, one grandson, and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg and from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Church. Memorial contributions can be made to St. James Church.
