James C. Mundy, 89, Austin, Texas
James C. Mundy, 89, of Austin, Texas, died Tuesday, February 9, at Gracy Woods II Living Center in Austin, Texas. He was born in Jasper September 4, 1931, to Urban and Loraine (Hoffman) Mundy.
James was a 1949 graduate of Jasper High, received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana State Teachers College, his masters from Indiana State, and his advanced certificate in music education from the University of Illinois. He taught band and choir to students in grades 1-12 in Catholic and public schools. When health issues surfaced for family members he retired early from teaching and returned to Jasper, working at the Jasper Desk Company. He spent the final years of his life near his daughter in Austin. He was a lifelong Catholic, a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. He played trumpet in a big-band style group, loved playing the piano, and leading the family in sing-alongs. He enjoyed gardening, reading, camping, taking long walks, teaching his children and grandchildren how to swim, how to fish, or how to drive a car.
He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth “Liz” Mundy Boyd, Plainfield, and Anne Mundy Klock and husband Bill, Austin; three grandchildren, Stephanie Klock Rayl and husband Jeremy and Cynthia and Anna Boyd; one great-grandchild, Jace McKee; and one sister; Sharon Wilkus and husband Jerry, Medford, Oregon.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Maria Catherine Mundy.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
