Gerald “Jerry” Gutzweiler, 87, Jasper

Gerald “Jerry” Gutzweiler, 87, of Jasper, died Saturday, October 3, at his home. He was born in Jasper November 16, 1932, to Bernie and Albertine “Dickie” Gutzweiler. He married Doris V. Winkler February 6, 1954, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. She died April 20, 2019.

Jerry was a 1950 graduate of Jasper High School and a1952 graduate of Lockyear Business College in Evansville. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 147. He and his wife Doris worked together from 1956 to 1996. They owned and operated the Astra Theater in Jasper, which he purchased in 1966, Jerry’s Sundries, which he purchased in 1956, Gambles Hardware, that he started in1961, and the Tivoli Theater in Jasper, which he purchased in 1966 and was closed after a fire in 1970 that claimed the life of his sister Margaret Ann Gutzweiler. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, the Jasper Knights of Columbus, and the Jasper Moose Lodge. He served on the Jasper Board of Zoning Appeals from 1972 to 1980, and was the director of the Indiana Theatre Owners Association from 1988 to 1992. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.

He is survived by one daughter; Ann Burger and husband Al, Jasper; two grandchildren; Luke Ward and Stacey Hart-Epley; and two great-grandchildren; Wyatt Ward, and Virginia Epley.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly Joyce Gutzweiler, who died in infancy, and Margaret Ann Gutzweiler.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church. Masks and social distancing will be required for the visitation and mass. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Joseph Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences can be shared at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. American Legion Post 147 will conduct military graveside rites.
