Roman B. Tempel, 94, Ferdinand

Roman B. Tempel, 94, of Ferdinand, died Saturday, September 12, at his home. He was born in Ferdinand January 14, 1926, to John and Sophia (Fleck) Tempel. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Pund July 3, 1951, at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in Ferdinand. .

Roman was a lifelong member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church, and the St. Joseph Sodality. He was a member of the Ferdinand Senior Citizens. He retired from DMI Furniture after 43½ years of employment. After retirement he drove for the Meals on Wheels program for 15 years. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of the first Honor Flight in 2014. He was a torch bearer for the Indiana Centennial and a life member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 (past commander) and Huntingburg VFW Post 2366.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Tempel; seven daughters, JoRene Richard and Rebecca Hedinger, both of Ferdinand, Michelle Brockman and Cindy Faulkenberg and husband Terry, all of St. Meinrad, Cheryl Childress and husband Bobby, St. Henry, Karen Franchville and husband Larry, Bandon, and Sharon Jones and husband Joe, English; three sons, LeRay Tempel and wife Clara, St. Meinrad, Paul Tempel and wife Julie, Huntingburg, and Jeff Tempel and wife Tracy, Ferdinand. Thirty-seven grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances Krampe, Ferrdinand;

In addition to his paents he was preceded in death by eight brothers, Joe, Charles, Jerome, Hubert, Leo, Albert, Dennis, and Gilbert Tempel, one sister, Marie Tempel, and sons-in-law Mike Richard, Dennis Hedinger, and Mark Brockman.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at St. Ferdinand Church. Memorial contributions can be made to a favorite charity. Online condolences can be shared at A mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Wednesday at the church followed by burial and military honors in the church cemetery.
