Helen Marie Hoelscher, 85, Ferdinand
Helen Marie Hoelscher, 85, died Wednesday, August 26, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. She and her husband had recently relocated to Scenic Hills at the Monastery in Ferdinand to be closer to family. She was born in Boonville, Missouri, July 16, 1935, to Jacob and Anna Marie (Gerke) Schwartz. She married LaVern Hoelscher June 4, 1960.
Helen grew up on a farm and was a 1953 graduate of Saints Peter and Paul High School in Boonville, Missouri. She and her husband moved to Marshallton, Iowa in 1960 where they raised their family. In addition to being a homemaker Helen worked for a number of years at ACI, the Boliver Law firm, and the Federal Land Bank. She was a member of St. Henry Catholic Church for 60 years and participated in The Sew Ladies for several decades, during which time she crocheted hundreds of baby sweaters and made layettes for families in need. She was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and had a special affection for Stan “The Man” Musial. She loved crossword puzzles and all types of needle work from knitting and crocheting to quilting.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, LaVern Hoelscher; three daughters, Kristin Hoelscher-Schacker and husband Dr. Timothy Schacker, Sunfish Lake, Minnesota, Erica Hoelscher, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Andrea Hoelscher and husband Dr. Robert Alvis, Ferdinand; six grandchildren; two brothers, Norman and Harold; one sister, Betty; five nieces; and one nephew.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Gilbert.
After cremation rites a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in Ferdinand. Internment will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. Donations can be made in Helen’s name to House of Compassion, 211 W Church St., Marshalltown, IA 50158.
