Dennis J. Schnell, 93, Celestine

Dennis J. Schnell, 93, of Celestine, died Tuesday, April 18, at his home. He was born in Celestine April 25, 1927, to Albert and Cecelia (Herzog) Schnell. He married Shirley Beckman May 29, 1957, at St. Martin Catholic Church in Siberia

Dennis was a veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Breidenbaugh Concrete, was a self-employed lifelong farmer, and worked on the Schnell and Son Sawmill with his father Albert. He played guitar in country bands in the Dubois County area. He was a member of St. Isidore Parish – St. Celestine Catholic Church in Celestine and American Legion Post 47. He enjoyed family, farming, and country music and loved hunting with his coon dogs and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Schnell; three daughters, Amy Kendall and husband Steve, Dale, Rita Wargel and husband Greg, Evansville, and Crystal Evans and husband Jason, Ferdinand; two sons, Neal Schnell and Lee Schnell and wife Danielle, all of Celestine; 17 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; one brother, Charles Schnell, Jasper; and three sisters, Sylvia Cottle, Raleigh, North Carolina, Darlene Frick and husband Leroy, Dale, and Judith Schnell, Jasper.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Alice Prechtel, and one son-in-law, Jake V. Kimmel.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Isidore Parish-St. Celestine Catholic Church. Online condolences can be shared at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery. VFW Post 673 will conduct military graveside rites.
