Shirley Ann Stern, 84, Ferdinand

Shirley Ann Stern, 84, of Ferdinand, died Saturday, August 1, at St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville. She was born in Jasper April 28, 1936, to Otto J. and Bertha C. (Bieker) Vonderheide. She married John Louis Stern June 13, 1974, in Nevada. He died April 13, 1996.

Shirley was a lifelong teacher. She was a graduate of St. Benedict College in Ferdinand and earned her Master’s Degree from Ball State University. She taught in several school systems in Indiana and California. She was nominated for Teacher of the Year while in the Boonville School System. After retirement from teaching she worked at St. Meinrad Archabbey as a switchboard operator and call center worker. She was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church, and its St. Anne’s Sodality, the Ferdinand Daughters of Isabella, Ferdinand Senior Citizens, and a former member of the Santa Claus Garden Club. She was an Oblate of St. Benedict and served as a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound

She is survived by one step-son, John Douglas Stern; one brother, David J. Vonderhide and wife Yvonne, Severance, Colorado; four sisters, Betty Waninger and husband Clarence and Alice Lindauer and husband David, all of Ferdinand; Carol Waninger and husband Dennis, Fulda, and Marilyn Harpenau and husband Paul Louis , Louisville; 27 nieces; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by four brothers, Marvin, Kenneth, Otto Jr., and Leon Vonderheide.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Ferdinand Church. Memorial contributions can be made to the Sisters of St. Benedict. Online condolences can be shared at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery.
