Edward I. Payne, 84, Huntingburg

Edward I. Payne, 84, of Huntingburg, died Thursday, July 16, at his home. He was born in Sargo, Kentucky, July 26, 1935, to Richard and Hettie Mae (Peak) Payne. He married Shirley A. Zink August 7, 1957, in Shawneetown, Illinois. She died April 29, 2014.

Edward was employed as an electrician and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was best known in the area as “The Candy Man”. For nearly 15 year he enjoyed sharing sweet treats with people of all ages. Earlier in his life, as a member of Dale Bible Church, he worked as a kitchen volunteer at Camp Shakamak State Park. For many years he played and coached baseball and volunteered at Shared Abundance Ministries. He was a member of True Vine Baptist Church in Ferdinand and enjoyed playing 500 Rummy and Yahtzee.

He is survived by four daughters, Sharlene Schitter and husband Ron, Jasper, and Pam Payne, Debbie Smith, and Julie Eckert and husband Mike, all of Huntingburg; three sons, Ed Payne, Jr, Dale, Jon Payne, West Baden, and Kevin Payne, Paoli; six sisters,  Geraldine Werner, Agnes Gish, Mary Ruth McFarland, Judy Willet and JoAnn Miller, all of Evansville, and Betty Sue Lockyear, Newburgh; 23 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Friday at Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg. Visitors are asked to follow Covid-19 recommendations. Private funeral services will be held at the funeral home with Pastor Josh LaGrange officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Holland American Legion Post 343 Memorial Detail.
