Robert Lee “Bob” Wertman, 89, Holland
Robert Lee “Bob” Wertman, 89, of Holland, died March 29 in Clewiston, Florida. He was born in Spencer County October 14, 1930, to Ralph and Grace (Sattler) Wertman. He married Sharon Wibbeler September 1, 1956.
Bob attended Dale, Holland, and Huntingburg elementary schools and early in his freshman year in high school his family moved back to Holland where he played basketball and baseball for the Dutchmen and graduated in 1949. After high school he was employed at the Holland Dairy until enlisting in the Navy in 1952. He served on the aircraft carriers USS Bairoko and USS Oriskany during the Korean Conflict and with his shipmates participated in the H-bomb tests at Eniwetok Atoll.
An avid sports fan, Bob played with and later managed the Holland baseball team in the Deer Trail League. He and his wife enjoyed camping across the United States and Canada and eventually became part-time residents of Lakeport, Florida. He was a lifelong member of Holland United Methodist Church and belonged to Holland American Legion Post 343 for 60 years. He was honored in 2018 for his longtime support of Southridge Raider athletics when he received the Spirit of Southridge award.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sharon Wertman; two sons, Kevin Wertman and spouse Diane, Holland, and Lee Wertman and spouse Jeff Rothweiler, St. Louis; one daughter, Tammy Wertman, Holland; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Wertman.
Friends may call from 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Holland UMC. Online condolences can be shared at www.nassandson.com. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with Pastor Keith Chanley officiating. The Holland American Legion Post 343 Memorial Detail will conduct military rites.
