Mercedes S. Spellmeyer, 91, Jasper
Mercedes S. Spellmeyer, 94, of Jasper, died Sunday, May 10, at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. She was born in St. Philip November 29, 1925, to Joseph and Blandina (Merkley) Schenk. She married Norbert J. Spellmeyer September 24, 1946, at St. Philip Catholic Church in Posey County. He died January 28, 2006.
Mercedes was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. She was a member of the St. Anne’s Society and the Jasper Circle of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed distributing her homemade cookies and cakes during the holidays, playing bingo, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters; Carol Medellin and husband Robert, Cincinnati, and Mary Jane Miller and husband Rodney, Jasper; five sons; James Spellmeyer and wife Mary, David Spellmeyer and wife Connie, and Norbert Spellmeyer, Jr., all of Jasper, Donnie Spellmeyer and wife Kathy, Gentryville, and Robert “Red” Spellmeyer and wife Joyce, Celestine; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Spellmeyer, two grandsons, Andy and Jason Spellmeyer, one great-granddaughter, Cayla Feltman, three sisters, Anne Wagner, Lucille Titzer, and Clara Mae Spellmeyer, and one brother, Urban Schwenk. She was the last surviving member of her Schenk family.
Private funeral services will be held at Becher-Kluesner Funeral Home in Jasper with entombment following in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Joseph Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences can be shared at www.becherkluesner.com.
