Eugene A. “Gene” Haase

Eugene A. “Gene” Haase, 92, of Ireland, died Thursday, May 7, St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. He was born in Fornfelt, Missouri, April 3, 1928, to Albert and Alvina (Blattel) Haase. He married Barbara Schmitt June 10, 1954, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland. She died November 18, 1994.

Gene was a graduate of Jasper High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served two years during the Korean Conflict. Gene worked for Fromme Electric for nine years and retired from the city of Jasper, where he worked for 36 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Ireland, Jasper Knights of Columbus, Ireland Sportsman Club, and VFW Post 673. He was an avid card player, especially Sheepshead, and enjoyed playing horseshoes and watching sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and Indiana University athletic teams.

He is survived by three daughters, Rosemary Betz and husband Charlie, Schnellville, Beverly Kempf, Jasper, and Jane Schaefer and husband Kenny, Fulda; two sons, Michael Haase and wife Donna, Ireland, and Tom Haase and wife Janet, Huntingburg; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild on the way; one uncle, Leon Blattel, Cape Giradeau, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Lou Brain, Martha Kern, and Ann Mae Rainey, and one brother, Carmen “Pete” Haase.

Private funeral services will be held at Becher-Kluesner Funeral Homes in Jasper with burial following in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ireland. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the wishes of the family. Online condolences can be shared at www.becherkluesner.com.
