James W. “Jim” Hanning, 92, Santa Claus

James W. “Jim” Hanning, 92, of Santa Claus, died Friday, March 20. He was born in Santa Claus June 10, 1927, to Charles and Hilda (Reinke) Hanning.

Jim was a lifelong resident of Santa Claus, residing on the family farm. In addition to farming he was a postal carrier and served as a county councilman. He was on the board of directors of Mutual Home Insurance, Santa La Hill Water, and Spencer County Bank. He served in the United States Navy, was a member of Santa Claus American Legion Post 242, Gentryville Masonic Lodge 424, Scottish Rite, Hadi Temple, and Santa Claus United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports, and spending time with family, his passion was farming.

He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Bull and husband Victor, Harleyville, South Carolina, Constance Wagner and husband Othmar, Santa Claus, and Christina Lee and husband Michael, Dale; six grandchildren, Alison and Lindsey Bull, James Wagner and wife Susan, Jonathan Wagner and wife Ashley, Jeffrey Wagner and wife Courtney, and Morgan (Michael) Rice; two step-grandchildren, Scott Lee and wife Brooke and Beth Lee; 11 great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Jane Brittingham and husband Hanning, Jasper, and his special friend, Macy Schmitt, Santa Claus.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Hanning.

Due to the coronavirus, a private family service will be held Tuesday at the Santa Claus United Methodist Church. Rev. Tim Ahlemeyer and Rev. Jill Kaetzel will officiate at the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with Santa Claus American Legion Post 242 conducting military honors. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Santa Claus United Methodist Cemetery Fund at 351 North Holiday Blvd., Santa Claus, IN 47579, or Heart to Heart Hospice at 415 E. 6th Street, Jasper, IN 47546.
