Richard L. Schwoeppe, 89, Ferdinand

Richard L. Schwoeppe, 89, of Ferdinand, died Tuesday, February 18 at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. He was born in Rockport December 15, 1930, to John and Louise (Woebkenburg) Schwoeppe. He married Evelyn Bolte November 7, 1953, at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church.

Richard was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 for over 60 years, the Ferdinand Community Center, and Christ the King parish, St. Ferdinand Church and its St. Joseph Sodality and its choir for over 60 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Indiana Hoosiers basketball, and Forest Park Rangers athletics. He volunteered for many years at Meals on Wheels.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Schwoeppe; two sons, Steve Schwoeppe and wife Linda, Ferdinand, and John Schwoeppe and wife Georgia, Fishers; five daughters, Margie Stallman and husband Dave and Kathy Hoppenjans and husband Mike, all of Ferdinand, Janet Yorlano and husband Steve, Gallatin, Tennessee, Linda McCoy and husband Andy, Columbia, Maryland, and Ann Sonderman and husband Andy, Greenwood; one sister, Mary Lou Weisman and husband Darrell, Ireland; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Floyd, Charles, Louis, and James Schwoeppe.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Sunday and from 7-9:30 a.m. Monday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church or the Sisters of St. Benedict. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ferdinand Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 will conduct military graveside rites.
