Mildred T. Vaal, 86, St. Meinrad

Mildred T. Vaal, 86, of St. Meinrad, died Tuesday, February 18, at her home. She was born in Dubois September 20, 1933, to Fred and Leona (Schepers) Humbert. She married Harold A. Vaal June 11, 1955, at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Dubois. He died April 8, 1997.

Mildred retired from General Electric after 37 years of service. She enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, word searches, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. After retiring she often babysat for her grandkids. When her husband became ill she became his caregiver throughout his illness.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Vaal and wife Wendy and Rodney Vaal and wife Mary Agnes, all of St. Meinrad; seven daughters, Donna Foertsch and husband Dennis and Denise Lambeck and husband Randy, all of Evanston, Charlene Nowotny and Sharon Schwindel and companion Dennis Mulzer, all of St. Meinrad, Charlotte Hinton and husband Rodney, Tell City, Darlene Brown and fiance John Metzler, Dale, and Sheila Lahee and husband David, Santa Claus; one brother, Norbert Humbert and wife Veronica, Huntingburg; 32 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren and two more on the way.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one grandson, Christopher Schwindel, four brothers, Richard, Fred Jr., Maurice, and Eugene Humbert, and four sisters, Mary Merkel, Elizabeth Schepers, Anna Merkel, and Mathilda Kern.

Friends may call from 1-7 p.m. Monday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and from 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Meinrad Church. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery.
