Sylvester B. “Sylv” Erny, 87, Jasper
Sylvester B. “Sylv” Erny, 87, of Jasper, died Saturday, December 28, at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. He was born in Jasper June 19, 1932, to Edward and Christina (Blessinger) Erny. He married Patricia Ann Goeppner September 12, 1957, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland.
Sylv was a U.S. Army veteran, served in Germany, and was a member of American Legion Post 147 in Jasper. He retired from Erny Sheet Metal in Jasper after many years of service. He was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, the Jasper Knights of Columbus, and Jasper Outdoor Recreation. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Erny; four daughters, Cheryl Burke and husband Steve and Amy Hopf and husband Chris, all of Jasper, and Janet Hopf and husband Terry, Huntingburg, and Ann Messmer and husband Tim, all of Huntingburg; two sons, Stan Erny and wife June and Roger Erny and wife Cheryl, all of Huntingburg; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Eckerle and husband Donnie, Betty Reynolds, and Mildred Erny, all of Jasper; and one brother, Harold Erny and wife Mildred, all of Jasper.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Philip Erny, one granddaughter, Jillian Erny, one great-grandson, Matthew Hardin, three sisters, Mary Alice Schuetter, Helen Hochgesang, and Anna Mae Reckelhoff, and three brothers, Robert, Richard, and Vincent Erny.
Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper and from 9-10 a.m. Friday at Precious Blood Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. American Legion Post 147 will conduct military graveside rites
