VELPEN (NNDC) – Two people, including one from Huntingburg, were injured in an accident Sunday afternoon in southeast Pike County.

Indiana Conservation officers say 18-year old Jonathan Schum of Huntingburg was operating an ATV, traveling southbound on South 1075 East near Velpen when the ATV struck an SUV that was pulling out of a driveway.

Authorities say 47-year old Marilyn Hanselman  was pulling out of her driveway onto County Road 1075 East shortly before 4:00PM.

Schum’s ATV collided with the front drivers side of Hanselman’s SUV. The ATV flipped in the air on impact, throwing Schum and a passenger from the ATV, causing Schum to be trapped beneath the ATV.  Authorities say Schum was traveling at a high rate of speed and was unable to avoid the collision.

16-year old Paige Kluemper of Petersburg, was the passenger.

Schum was Air-Evaced to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where he was treated for a laceration to his head. Kluemper was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities say alcohol may be a contributing factor and the accident is still being investigated.

Schum and Kluemper were not wearing a helmet or protective equipment which Conservation Officers strongly encourage while operating ATV’s.
