HUNTINGBURG (NNDC) – Downed trees and even damage a local dog park were reported from last night’s series of thunderstorms that rolled through the area.
Two large trees were downed by strong winds that accompanied the heavy rain. The strongest storms crossed Dubois County shortly after 5pm.
One of the large trees fell across U. S. 231 near 2nd Street in Huntingburg. The trees blocked traffic in both directions for a time. Street crews cut away at the downed tree to get it small enough to move onto 2nd Street to reopen traffic on 231 (Main Street).
Another large tree blocked Geiger Street near 5th Street.
There was also report of damage at the newly-opened dog park inside Gutzweiler Park on Jasper’s near northside. Jasper parks director Ken Buck says a tree in the backyard of adjoining residence uprooted causing damage to the park’s fence.
The park is open. Buck says the damaged section of the fence will be replaced next week. Temporary fencing is currently in place.
