Fire Destroys Pole Barn Near Haysville
HAYSVILLE (NNDC) – Less than 48 hours after a dramatic fire destroyed a 100+ year old barn and killed a 4-H calf near the Bretzville junction, fire engulfed and destroyed a pole barn eight miles northeast of Haysville in rural Martin County. The Haysville Volunteer Fire Department has the contract for fire protection in Rutherford Township.
The fire was reported around 2:45 Sunday afternoon. Twelve Haysville firemen battled the 66×60 aluminum sided barn for less than an hour before they ran out of water in the remote area. They called for more water, but could only stand around and watch the fire accelerate before the water arrived.
A number of large bales of hay and straw fueled the fire, which was still burning at 4:30. The barn, owned by Harold Parsons, is located just off Parsons Lane. Parsons, a retired farmer who also retired from working as a mechanic at National Gypsum in Shoals, told NewsNow Dubois County that the fire destroyed a number of farm vehicles, including tractors, hay balers, and a bulldozer. He said everything in the barn was destroyed and that he has no idea how the fire started.\
