Memorial Day Service Saturday Honors Tom Messier
JASPER (NNDC) – Dubois County veterans organizations and all veterans who died in the last year will be remembered Saturday during the annual Memorial Day service in Jasper. The service will be held next to the Veterans Memorial on west side of the courthouse, beginning at 10 a.m.
Deceased veteran Tom Messier will be honored. Messier, a native of Bourboness, Illinois, retired from the Marines as a Master Sergeant, and went to work for the U.S. Post Office for 20 years.’
He was an active member of VFW Post 673 in Jasper, serving a number of years on the Honor Guard and house committee. He was also a lifelong member of American Legion Post 147 in Jasper. After helping to organize the Southern Indiana Leatherneck Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Messier served on that organization’s detachment paymaster for almost seven years. He died September 9, 2007, at the age of 72.
Timothy Craddock, base commander at Crane, will be the guest speaker at Saturday’s service. Temporary bleachers, courtesy of the Jasper Parks and Recreation Department, will be available, but those attending are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.
