Southridge Raiders are Class 2A State Baseball Runner-Up – Joe LaGrange Wins L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award.

Indianapolis (NNDC):  A wild finish at Victory Field on Tuesday night saw a State Championship slip away from Southridge as the Raiders fall 4-3 in the title game to Alexandria Monroe.

The Raiders struck first in the championship game as Camden Gasser crossed the plate for Southridge in the top half of the first inning.    The Raiders were able to get a run across the plate without a hit in the frame.   Gasser reached on an error and advanced to 2nd base on an overthrow to first base.   Colson Montgomery reached first on a walk and Chase Taylor was hit by a pitch.   With the bases loaded,  Ethan Bell helped his own cause with an RBI dribbler to 2nd base which scored Gasser.    The fielders choice was the 2nd out of the inning as Taylor was called out at 2nd.   The Raiders stranded two runners in the inning as Joe Lagrange went down on strikes.

Southridge went down quiet in the 2nd and 3rd inning while Alexandria Monroe would threaten in the bottom half of the 3rd after Bub Misner reached base after being hit by a pitch.   Trey Stokes would single to right but Bell would get Brennon Morehead to pop out to the Raiders shortstop Colson Montgomery to end the inning.

The Raiders plated 2 more runs in the top of the 4th inning after Ethan Bell singled up the middle with one out.  Sam Sermersheim entered the game as a pinch runner for Bell.   Joe Lagrange would send Sermersheim across the plate with his RBI double over the center fielders head, giving the Raiders a 2-0 lead.   Southridge wasn’t finished as Conner Oxley stepped up to the plate and gave the Raiders a 3-0 lead with a double to right center which scored Joe LaGrange from 2nd base.    Morehead would strikeout Patrick Sander and Carter Whitehead grounded out to end the inning.

Alexandria Monroe would also threaten to score in the bottom half of the 4th as Rylan Metz earned a walk with one out.  Brayton Gaines was hit by the pitch giving the Tigers runners on 1st and 2nd.  The sophomore Bell remained calm and ended the threat by striking out Miller Abernathy and Bub Misner.   After 4, the Raiders still led 3 to nothing.

The Tigers would come alive in the 6th inning and struck for 2 runs.   Nick Williams sent a one out single to left and was replaced by courtesy runner Caleb Bott.   Rylan Metz would step to the plate sending a single to left moving Bott to second base.   Brayton Gaines would put Alexandria Monroe on the board with an RBI single scoring Bott.  Eli Whitman would pinch run for Gaines.   Ethan Bell would get Miller Abernathy to strike out but a wild pitch would allow Metz to score pulling the Tigers within 1.   Brendan Luzader would ground out to Montgomery ending the inning.   Southridge would take a 3-2 lead into the 7th inning.

The Raiders would go quietly in the top of the 7th.   Ethan Bell would fan the first two Tigers in the bottom of the 7th as Cade Vernetti and Trey Stokes went down swinging.  Kole Stewart struck out in what would have ended the game, but the ball got by the Raiders catcher allowing Stewart the opportunity to run and a throwing error to first base allowed Stewart to advance to 2nd.   Brennan Morehead sent a single up the middle allowing Stewart to score tying the game at 3.   Morehead advanced to 2nd on the throw to home.   Nick Williams came up to the plate and popped a fly ball into left field that dropped allowing Morehead to score giving the Tigers the improbable win.

Ethan Bell took the loss on the mound for the Raiders after pitching a gem.   Southridge had 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 errors.  Ethan Bell had a single, Conner Oxley and Joe LaGrange both had doubles for the Raiders.   Bell, Oxley and LaGrange all had 1 RBI apiece.  Alexandria Monroe finished up with 4 runs on 7 hits and had one error.  Southridge ends the season as the Class 2A State Runner Up for the 2nd year in a row.

Joe LaGrange was announced as the L.V. Mental Attitude Award winner for Class 2A.   The recipient of the L.V.
