Anna Mae Songer, 96, Huntingburg

Anna Mae Songer, 96, of Huntingburg, died Thursday, November 28, at her home. She was born in Huntingburg March 12, 1923, to Joseph A. and Philomena (Hollander) Griesinger. She married Glen W. Songer February 19, 1946, in Mooresville. He died February 25, 2012.

Anna Mae was a 1941 graduate of Huntingburg High School. She attended Welborn Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Evansville from 1942 to1945 and  worked as a registered nurse for 51 years, the last 33 years in obstetrics/gynecology at Stork Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Huntingburg. She also worked at Welborn Hospital in Evansville, Riley and Methodist hospitals in Indianapolis, Boehne Tuberculosis Hospital in Evansville, as an industrial nurse at General Electric in Huntingburg and as a private duty and Red Cross nurse in Huntingburg and Evansville.

She and her husband owned and operated Songer’s OK Grocery in Huntingburg until 1963 when she returned to fulltime nursing at Stork Hospital. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg where she served as a Eucharistic minister. She visited the homebound brining them Communion for over 25 years. She and her husband were active in the Dubois County Democratic Party. She was a member of the Serra Club, volunteered with a crisis prevention hotline, and enjoyed going on bus tours.

She is survived by one daughter, Gwen Barnett and husband Jesse, Evansville; four sons, Gregory M. Songer and wife Marsha, Bill Songer and wife Julie, Joseph A. Songer, and John Songer, all of Huntingburg; 15 grandchildren, Jason, Jessica, Aaron, Rachel, Mara, Lauren, Jeff, Josh, Jacob, Adam, Hillary, Andrew, Drew, Ian, and Chloe; 14 great-grandchildren, Prudence, Tallulah, Davin, Aidan, Breckin, Jude, Madeline, Mikala, Brayden, Madison, Maci, Kru, Archer, Dean, and Mabel; one great-great-grandchild, Eleanor; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Tyring, and an infant brother, Jerome Griesinger.

Friends may call from 8:30-9:45 a.m. Tuesday at Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg. Memorial Hospital’s Nursing Honor Guard will conduct a vigil service at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
