Lawrence P. Metz, 92, Celestine

Lawrence P. Metz, 92, of Celestine, died  Monday, October 21, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in Elon (now under water in Patoka Lke) to Herman and Lorena (Stemle) Metz. He married Bernadine (Stetter) Jahn November 23, 1978. She died August 28, 2002.

Lawrence retired as a machine room supervisor for Wood Design Furniture Company in French Lick. He worked in farming and in management for the Lilly Paper Company in New Albany. In 2018 he was honored as the oldest male in the 175th Celestine Centennial Parade. He and his wife Bernie enjoyed working in their ceramic shop in  their home making Christmas items and many other gift items. He was an avid reader and loved gardening. He was a member of St. Isidore Parish – St. Celestine Campus and the Celestine Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by one son, Thomas Jahn and wife Victoria, Jasper; one daughter, Mary Mendel and husband Don, St. Anthony; seven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Elizabeth (Stetter) Egler, Bloomington.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Blessinger.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at St. Celestine Church. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Isidore Parish. Online condolences can be shared at www.becherkluesner.com. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery.
