Frank J. Schmitt, 94, Huntingburg

Frank J. Schmitt, 94, of Huntingburg, died Monday, October 14, at The Waters of Huntingburg. He was born in Jasper May 19, 1925, to Albert and Katherine (Froelich) Schmitt. He married Ruth Alice Lechner April 15, 1947, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. She died August 31, 2013.

Frank was a farmer; a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg, a past director of Patoka Valley Feed in Jasper. He served as a paratrooper in the United States Army and loved playing cards with family and friends.

He is survived by three sons, Daniel Schmitt and wife Sherry, Velpen, Norbert Schmitt and wife Phyllis, Huntingburg, and Lee Ray Schmitt and wife Susie, Washington; three daughters, Mary Beth Vogler and husband Tom, Ireland, Diana Uebelhack and husband Dennis, Otwell, and Kim Davis, Huntingburg; one sister, Gloria Jean Ruhe, Brazil; his caregiver, Emily Gray, Huntingburg; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Church. Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary’s Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery. The funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Ryan Hilderbrand. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 2366 Memorial Detail.
