Irene R. Wendholt, 89, Ferdinand

Irene R. Wendholt, 89, of Ferdinand, died Tuesday, September 24, at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. She was born in St. Meinrad February 7, 1930, to Oscar and Maria Matilda (Werne) Vaal. She married Robert L. Wendholt October 14, 1950, at St. Meinrad Archabbey Church. He died June 11, 1996.

Irene was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church. She was a hairdresser for many years. She and her husband were co-owners of The Covered Bridge Tavern from 1955 to 1970 and owners of Bob’s Liquors from 1970 to 1992. She enjoyed Red Hat gatherings, flowers, traveling, and sports activities.

She is survived by three sons, Gary Wendholt and wife Geri and Rick Wendholt and wife Sue, all of Ferdinand, and Sam Wendholt, Indianapolis; seven  grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Edgar Vaal, Ferdinand.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Everett Persohn, one sister, Mildred (Hagedorn) Leggett, and two brothers, Alvin and Eugene Vaal.

Friends may call from 8-11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ferdinand Church. Online condolences can be shared at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery.
