Bernita C. Metz, 77, St. Anthony

Bernita C. Metz, 77, of St. Anthony, died Friday, August 30, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. She was born in Ferdinand  December 11, 1941, to Bernard and Ida (Begle) Hoppenjans. She married Linus Metz May 26, 1962, at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in Ferdinand.

Bernita retired from Best Chairs, where she worked as a seamstress for over 30 years. She was a member of St. Isidore Parish – St. Celestine Catholic Church and the American Sewers Guild. She enjoyed arts and crafts, sewing, card making, flower gardening, cooking, playing cards, spending time with family and friends, and spending time in eucharistic adoration. She and her husband were recipients of the Brute Award for their service in the Catholic faith

She is survived by her husband, Linus Metz; one daughter, Suzanne Knies and husband Daniel, Jasper; two sons, Brian Metz and wife Joanie, Ferdinand, and Duane Metz and wife Ann, Huntingburg; five grandchildren, Rachel, Amy, and Bryze Metz and, Lee and Blake Knies; one sister, Lastie Carl, New Albany; and one brother, Donald Hoppenjans, Ferdinand.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister, Hermina Hoppenjans, and five brothers, John, Ernst, Alfred, Norman, and Richard Lange.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at St. Celestine Church. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Isidore Parish or to a favorite charity. Online condolences can be shared at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. at the church with burial following in the church cemetery.
