Herbert J. “Herb” Lueken, 81, Jasper

Herbert J. “Herb” Lueken, 81, of Jasper, died Saturday, August 17, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in Schnellville July 11, 1938, to Mathias and Frances (Prechtel) Lueken. He married Rita Weyer July 11, 1964, at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in Ferdinand.

Herb was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Korea. He was a member of Jasper American Legion Post 147 and VFW Post 673 where he served with the VFW Honor Guard. He worked as an upholsterer at Indiana Chair and retired from Jasper Seating Company. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper and enjoyed his work, playing cards with friends, volunteering in the community, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Lueken; two sons, Paul Lueken and wife Kim, Bretzville, and Phil Lueken and wife Michelle, Jasper; one daughter, Jane Zapfe and husband Joe, Jasper; six grandchildren, Joshua, Olivia, and Alyssa Lueken and Max, Patrick, and Felicity Zapfe; and one step-grandson, J.D. Wheatley.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ardella Weyer and Helen Buechler, and five brothers, Othmar, Albert, Alois, Edwin, and Robert Lueken.

Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contribuitions can be made to Holy Family Church or to a favorite charity. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Church with entombment following in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum. Jasper VFW Post 673 will conduct military graveside rites.
