Shirley L. Schmitt, 83, Ireland

Shirley L. Schmitt, 83, of Ireland, died Tuesday, June 18, at the Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born in Jasper April 6, 1936, to Herman and Elizabeth “Betty” (Schnell) Brescher.

Shirley was a 1954 graduate of Ireland High School. She retired from Leed’s Selling Tools in 2009, at the age of 73, where she worked for over 30 years. She also worked for the Knights of Columbus, the Phone Company, and from home, typing for the license bureau. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland and a member of its St. Anne’s Society. She loved her family and friends, and her wonderful trip to Medugorie, Bosnia, Herzegovia, in November 1996 with her church family. She also enjoyed reading and sewing.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Reuber, and Beverly Weyer, both of Ireland; three sons, Doug Schmitt and wife Glorida, Loogootee, Dean Schmitt, and companion Michelle Roelle, Otwell, and Daniel Schmitt, Jasper; six grandchildren, Dustin Schmitt and wife Brandi, Abby Mitchell and husband Doug, Tara Gibbs and husband Shane, Kiersten, Cole, and Ivan Weyer; and seven great-grandchildren..

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Allen Brescher, and one sister-in-law, Aline Brescher..

Friends may call from 1-3 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Church.  Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Mary Church Building Fund, Heart-to-Heart Hospice, or to a favorite charity.
