Alvin Daniel Elshoff, 96, Huntingburg

Alvin Daniel Elshoff, 96, of Huntingburg, died Tuesday, June 18, at Willow Dale Village in Dale. He was born December 19, 1922 to Daniel and Naomi (Vogel) Elshoff on the farm on which he lived for 96 years. He married LaVerne Trusty November 7, 1953, at the E.U.B. Church in Huntingburg. She died October 6,2013.

Alvin was a retired farmer and rural mail carrier. He was a member of the Huntingburg United Methodist Church where he achieved a perfect Sunday school attendance for 25 years. He traveled on mission trips to Russia, South Carolina, Texas, Florida, and the Island of Montserrat providing assistance to hurricane victims. He was a 1942 graduate of Holland High School, a member of the Red Bird Mission, a veteran of the U.Army, and a life-member of Holland American Legion Post 343. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Shared Abundance, Santa Claus Campground, and Maple Grove Campground. His hobbies included walking, reading the Bible (which he completed three times), and gardening.

He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Elshoff and husband Russell Friedman, Huntingburg, and Martha (David) Wooden and husband David, Franklin; one son, James Elshoff and wife Chasity, Petersburg; six grandchildren, Amanda Kibby, Kathryn Smith-Wilder, Daniel Smith, Aaron Elshoff, Christina Collins, and Jason Elshoff; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by two sisters, Viola Elshoff and Ruth Flint. He was the last surviving cousin on the Elshoff side of his family.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Huntingburg United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Historic Maple Grove Foundation or a favorite charity. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Private burial will take place at a later date. Pastor Logananne McCullough will officiate at the service. TheHolland American Legion Memorial Detail will conduct military rites at the church following the service.
