Gerard M. “Gary” Schmitt, 81, Ireland

Gerard M. “Gary” Schmitt, 81, of Ireland, died Monday, May 28, at his home. He was born in Ireland February 28, 1938, to Edward and Justine (Renner) Schmitt. He married Marlene Jahn June 17, 1967, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.

Gary was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a mechanic at DT Auto Service and Larry’s Service Center in Ireland for over 40 years. After retirement he worked for Schroering’s Plumbing and Heating. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, the Ireland Sportsman Club, where he was a past director, the Ireland Knights of Columbus, the Ireland Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years, the IVFA District 18, American Legion Post 147, and a past member of the Ireland Lions Club. He umpired for many years for Ireland Youth Sports when his children were playing sports. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Indiana Hoosiers, Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, St. Louis Cardinals, and his grandchildren play sports. He also enjoyed playing cards, listening to music, and attending country music shows.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marlene Schmitt, Ireland; one daughter, Kendra Renner and husband Max, Boone Township; four sons, Shawn Schmitt and wife Marissa, Carey Schmitt and wife Kim, and Brad Schmitt, all of Ireland, and Chad Schmitt and wife Ashley, Evansville; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Seraphia Schmitt and Bibiana Pipher, and three brothers, Edmund, Januarius, and James Schmitt.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at St. Mary’s Church. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary’s Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences can be shred at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Friday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery. American Legion Post 147 will conduct military graveside rites.
