Margaret J. Steffen, 97, Jasper

Margaret J. Steffen, 97, of Jasper, died Thursday, May 23, at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born in Washington March 15, 1922, to Walter and Mary (Grill) Kidd. She married John G. Steffen January 18, 1945, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Washington. He died June 5, 2005.

Margaret worked at Crane Navel Depot during World War II. She retired from Corbin’s Ready to Wear Store in Jasper, where she worked for 29 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, the Daughters of Isabella, the St. Anne’s Society, and Psi Iota Xi. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing cards with her friends, going on family vacations, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid  Jasper sports fan and attended many of the events and most recently listened to every football, baseball, and basketball game on the radio.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Mehringer and fiancé James Rueff, Jasper, and Mary Beth Delaney and husband Charles, Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, Jennifer Ball and husband Phil, Mark D. Mehringer and wife Tammy, Kristi Dragan and husband Joshua, Julie Truesdale, and Eric J. Mehringer and wife Kristen; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one sister, Alice McBrayer, and two brothers, John “Jack” and Robert L. Kidd.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The D of I and St. Anne’s Society will pray a rosary at 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Joseph Church, Heart to Heart Hospice, or to a favorite charity. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery.
