Jasper, Southridge and Northeast Dubois Win Softball Sectional Openers

Dubois County (NNDC):  The IHSAA Softball Sectionals got underway on Monday night and the county teams faired very well as Jasper, Southridge and Northeast Dubois all picked up wins.   The Forest Park Rangers kickoff their post season at home on Wednesday night.    At Jasper, the Wildcats were hitting on all cylinders as they pick up an 8-2 win over Vincennes Lincoln in the opening round of the Class 3A Sectional.   Jasper jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 2nd inning when the Alices plated 2 runs to get within 1, but the Wildcats defense held Vincennes scoreless for the remainder of the game.   Jasper would add 4 more runs in the 3rd inning and another in the 6th enroute to the 8-2 victory.   Mia Werner picked up the win on the mound for the Wildcats.   Jasper will face Washington on Tuesday night in game 2 with the winner advancing to the Class 3A Sectional Championship game on Wednesday.   The other two teams in the Jasper Sectional vying for a spot in the championship game is Princeton and Pike Central.  The Tigers and Chargers face off in game one on Tuesday night.

At Wood Memorial, the Northeast Dubois Jeeps earn a trip into the Class 1A Sectional championship game as they defeat Springs Valley 5-2.   The Lady Jeeps jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning before the Blackhawks plated 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a 2-1 lead.   Northeast Dubois would regain the lead with 2 runs in the 5th and another 2 in the 7th giving them the opening round win.    With the victory, Northeast Dubois advances to the Class 1A Sectional final and will face the host Wood Memorial Trojans.

In Class 2A Softball, the Southridge Raiders travelled to Linton to face off against Mitchell.  In a back and forth contest that saw Southridge down 2-0 in the bottom of the 3rd, the Raiders picked up a run when Amanda Brewer crossed the plate as Mitchell walked Peyton Nalley with the bases loaded.   Still trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the 4th, Raiders catcher Mikah Goeppner blasted a solo homerun tying the game at 2 runs apiece.   The back and forth match up continued and with the score tied at 5 runs each in the bottom of the 7th, Myah Montgomery stepped up to the plate and drove in pinch runner Loren Fleck to give the Raiders the 6-5 win and the opportunity to move into the Sectional semifinals.   Southridge will face off against South Knox with the winner advancing to the Class 2A Linton Sectional championship game.
