County Considers Adding a Tax to Help Fund Security Center Expenses

Dubois County (NNDC):

Dubois County Commissioners are considering adding a new tax to help with Security Center upgrades and operating costs.

Three options were discussed Monday. Two options were to use the local income tax structure but the consensus was that those funds are already needed for other programs.

The most popular option seemed to be a jail tax which could be in place for about 20 years.

A 2018 Indiana law allows counties to enact a tax rate not to exceed .2%, to be used for correctional facilities and rehab facilities.

The final study on the Security Center facility should be completed in the near future and will be made available to the public.  Plans are for a public hearing at 6 p.m. Monday, June 3, in the Jasper Common Council chambers.

If the council decides to move ahead with the tax, another public hearing is required, probably on the agenda at the regular meeting to be held on June 24.
