Joseph E. Wilmes, 91, Ferdinand

Joseph E. Wilmes, 91, of Ferdinand, died Friday, May 3, at St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville. He was born January 6, 1928, to Joseph H. and Matilda (Nord) Wilmes. He married Grace Matheis  April 24, 1954, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony.

Joseph retired from Verizon Phone Company and  Wilmes Window Manufacturing. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of Ferdinand Legion Post 124 and the Ferdinand Community Center. He was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church, and its St. Joseph Sodality. He was a graduate of Dale High School and enjoyed playing music at several local nursing homes and in several local bands. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Grace Wilmes; one daughter, Karen Jerger, Evansville; three sons, Glenn Wilmes and wife Brenda and Kurt Wilmes and wife Marya, all of Ferdinand, and Gregg Wilmes, St. Anthony; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Wilmes, one grandson, Jason Jerger; three sisters, Hilda Oser, Marcella Gogel, and Margaret Fetter, and seven brothers, Urban, Albert, Oscar, Clarence, Hubert, Ersnest, and Dennis Wilmes.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday and from 7-9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ferdinand Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Ferdinand Legion Post 124 will conduct military graveside rites.
