Capsized Kayak Leaves 2 Dead

Chandler (NNDC):

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is investigating the deaths of a father and daughter who died after a kayaking accident at the Blue Grass Fish & Wildlife Area, near Chandler.

Joshua Varner, 33, and Vivian Varner, 4, both of Newburgh, were kayaking on Blue Grass Pit on Thursday evening when their kayak apparently overturned. A family member became concerned when they had not returned when expected and emergency services were dispatched just after 7:00p.m.

Shortly after 9:00 p.m., authorities said both individuals were found floating in the water. Joshua was pronounced deceased at the scene. Vivian was taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where she later passed away from her injuries.

The kayak belonging to the victims was found capsized in the water approximately 500 yards away. Water temperature was about 55 degrees at the time and the water was about 10′ deep..

What caused the kayak to capsize is unknown at this time.  Life jackets were not being worn by the victims when they were recovered.

Conservation officers always encourage the use of life jackets while boating or when near water.
