Peter E. “Pete” Gerber, 80, Jasper

Peter E. “Pete” Gerber, 80, of Jasper, died Saturday, March 23, at his home. He was born in Ferdinand May 4, 1938, to Roman and Florabell (Russ) Gerber. He married Nancy Schmitt April 23, 1966, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.

Pete was a graduate of St. Ferdinand High School where he played basketball and baseball for the Ferdinand Crusaders. He played college baseball for Indiana State University in Terre Haute and graduated from Bellarmine University in Louisville. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124, and the owner and operator of Roberson Forest Materials. He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Jasper,  the Jasper Knights of Columbus, and a charter member of the Ferdinand Community Center. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, traveling, playing cards, watching Indiana University sports and the St. Louis Cardinals, spending time with his dogs, and spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Gerber; one daughter, Romy Kissel and husband Scott, Jasper; one son, Ted Gerber, Jasper; two grandchildren, Evan and Morgan Kissel; two sisters, Nancy Olinger and husband Andy and Mary Rousculp, all of Ferdinand; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Tom Gerber, and one nephew, Andy Gerberg.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church with inurnment following at a later date in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum in Jasper. The Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 will conduct military rites.
