Hubert B. “Hubie” Merkley, 88, Portersville

Hubert B. “Hubie” Merkley, 88, of Portersville, died Saturday, March 10, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in Siberia June 21, 1930, to Frank B and Laura K (Schepers) Merkley. He had two marriages. He married Margaret Ann Schenetzke June 26, 1952. She died April 22, 1992. He married Clara E. Rodenhouse September 26, 1992. She died January 7, 2017.

Hubie was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post 147 and VFW Post 673. He retired from J.H. Rudolph Asphalt  Company after 28 years of service and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and taking his dog for a drive.

He is survived by four daughters, Pam Merkley, Celestine, Sara Bailey and JoAnn Oser and fiancé Ron Uppencamp, all of Huntingburg, and Nancy Merkley, St. Anthony;  four sons, Randy Merkley and wife Kathy, St. Anthony, Dennis Merkley, Huntingburg, Darrell Merkley, Birdseye, and Hubert Merkley Jr.; five step children, Diana Seger, Pat Wininger, Linda Fuhrman, and Larry and Gary Bouillon; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Linda Atkins, Birdseye.

In addition to his parents and two wives he was preceded in death by one son, Roger Allen Merkley, and one sister, Hilda Schepers.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions can be made to the wishes of the family. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. VFW Post 673 will conduct military graveside rites.
