Mary Joanne Lehr-Hildenbrand, 74, Mariah Hill

Mary Joanne Lehr-Hildenbrand, 74, of Mariah Hill, died Friday, February 22, at Memoril Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper. She was born in Tell City February 8, 1945, to Virgil and Margie (Lautner) Rhodes. She married Bert Lehr August 19, 1967, in Mariah Hill. He died June 4, 1988. She married Jerome Hildenbrand November 23, 2012, in Mariah Hilll.

Joanne was a 1963 graduate of Tell City High School. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in education from Brescia College in 1967 and a Master’s degree in special education from Indiana University in 1978. She was a retired vocational coordinator and special needs teacher. She was a member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Mariah Hill and its St. Anne’s Sodality. She served on the Spencer County Leadership Council and was a past president of both the Mariah Hill Foundation and Regional Sewer District Boards. She enjoyed quilting, traveling to the beach, and spending time with her grandkids.

She is survived by her husband, Jerome Hildenbrand; two sons, Michael Lehr and wife Lindsey, Larkspur, Colorado, and Jim Lehr and wife Heather, Carmel; one daughter, Yvonne Lehr, Ferdinand; three stepsons, Lenny Hildenbrand and wife Ellen and Mike Hildenbrand, all of Louisville, and Vince Hildenbrand and wife Alisa, Jasper; one stepdaughter, Karen Schmitt and husband Glen, Jasper; two brothers, Don Rhodes and wife Barbara, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Bob Rhodes and wife Sonia, Buford, Georgia; three sisters, Chris Humes and husband Dave and Marky Wissman and husband Dave, all of Lusby, Maryland, and Kim Huck and husband Pete, Tell City; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband Bert Lehr, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Hadley Lehr, and one brother Jim Rhodes.

Friends may call from 1-7 p.m. (CDT) Tuesday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and from 9-10 a.m. (CDT) Wednesday at Mary Help of Christians Church.  Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, or to Freedom Reins Therapeutic Riding Center, Inc. Funeral services at 10 a.m. (CDT) Wednesday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery.
