Dorothy Mae “Toots” Gehlhausen, 85, Ferdinand

Dorothy Mae “Toots” Gehlhausen, 85, of Ferdinand, died Satirday, February 2, at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper. She was born in St. Meinrad April 7, 1933, to Anthony and Marietta (Wiederkehr) Vaal and foster parents Robert T. and Mildred F. (Gogel) Vaal. She married Leo F. “Junie” Gehlhausen November 15, 1952at  St. Meinrad Archabbey Church. He died October 28, 2004.

Dorothy was a member of St. Ferdinand Catholic Church and its St. Anne Sodality. She enjoyed playing cards, being with her grandkids, and taking care of her flowers.

She is survived by five daughters, Brenda Hildenbrand and husband Jim, Linda Verkamp, and Carol Klem, all of Ferdinand; Peggy Hildenbrand and husband Mark, Fulda, and Nancy Welp and husband Mark, Schnellville; one son, Gary Gehlhausen and wife Barb, Ferdinand; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Bettye Greulich and husband Leroy, St. Meinrad, Barbara Bennett and Charles Watts, Hartford, Kentucky, Antoinette “Toni” Mundy, Nicholasville, Kentucky, Norma Amos, Huntingburg, Kathy Hopf and husband Bill, Jasper, and Ruthie Clark and husband Rich and Connie Hildenbrand and husband Randy, all of Ferdinand; three brothers, Jerome Vaal, Carmel, Elmer “Tony” Vaal and wife Linda, Stanwood, Michigan, and Jim Vaal and wife Clara Mae, Ferdinand; and sister-in-law Janet Vaal, St. Meinrad.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Paul Klem and Paul Verkamp and one brother, Raymond Vaal.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and from 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, at St. Ferdinand Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, at St. Ferdinand Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
