Mary C. Freyberger

Mary C. Freyberger, age 89 of  Dubois, died Friday, February 1, at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born in Huntingburg February 23, 1929, to Hilbert E. and Catherine E. (Dittmer) Blackgrave. She married Daniel E. Freyberger December 7, 1968, at St. John’s Lutheran Church at the Dubois Crossroads. He died January 27, 2019.

Mary was a homemaker and worked as a waitress, cook, and housekeeper. She was a member of St. John’s Church and enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, taking scenic drives, fishing, puzzles, watching game shows, and people watching.

She is survived by four daughters, Alice Hildenbrand, Huntingburg, Denise Reuber and husband Jeff, Dubois, Christie Pace and husband Steve, St. Anthony, and Amy Freyberger (Melinda), Madison; three sons, David Rottet, Winslow, Steven Rottet, Haysville, and Doug Rottet and wife Jane, Bretzville; 23 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; son-in-law Allen Steckler, St. Henry; two sisters, Carol Durst, Petersburg, and Nelda Mendel and husband Ron, Jasper, and one brother, Gus “Tom” Blackgrave, Jasper.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret Steckler, one grandson, Jeff Rottet, one son-in-law, Tony Hildenbrand, one daughter-in-law, Kathy Rottet, two sisters, Bettye Howard  and Ruth Kern, and four brothers, Hilbert “Hip,”  Charles, Robert “Bob,” and Bill Blackgrave.

Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper and from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the wishes of the family. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery. Pastor Mary Poston will officiate.
