George E. Himsel, 75, Huntingburg

George E. Himsel, 75, of Huntingburg, died Sunday, December 9, at his home. He was born in Huntingburg November 19, 1943, to Elmer and Evelyn (Mann) Himsel. He married Mary Lou Welp November 22, 1970, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg.

George received a Bachelor’s Degree from Oakland City College and a Master’s of Education from Indiana State University. He was a fifth grade teacher in the Southwest Dubois School Corporation for 36 years before retiring. He coached basketball for many years and was a passionate Indiana University basketball fan. He enjoyed watching every game on TV and talking basketball with his grandsons and friends. He loved spending time at the Smoky Mountains, hiking trails with his wife. He also had a love for auto racing and attending the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Indianapolis 500.

He was an active member and volunteer at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, a former church board member. He enjoyed time volunteering at Shared Abundance in Huntingburg.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Lou Himsel; two daughters, Stacey Matelic and husband Stephen and Jennifer Grcevich and husband Brian, all of Indianapolis; one sister, Marlene Huls, Jasper; and seven grandchildren, Nate, Lyla, Eden, Drew, Chloe, Madelynn, and Lucas.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg and from 10-11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul’s Church. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association. Online condolences can be shared at Funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery. Rev. Timothy Holt will officiate at the service.
