Lawrence A. “Larry’ Bender, 85, Ferdinand

Lawrence A. “Larry” Bender, 85, of Ferdinand, died Sunday, October 28, at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. He was born in Siberia October 19, 1933, to Werner Sr. and Elenora (Denu) Bender. He married Patricia Kunkler June 18, 1960, at Saint Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Siberia.

Larry retired from Kimball International. He was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church. He was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran and a member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124. He enjoyed playing cards, farming, and playing league softball.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia Bender; two sons, Gregory Bender, Ferdinand, and Tim Bender, Birdseye; three grandchildren, Courtney, Alicia, and Ashlynne Bender; four brothers, Joseph Bender, Indianapolis, Werner Jr. and wife Rosie, Jasper, John Bender and wife Phyllis, St. Meinrad, and David Bender and wife Brenda, St. Anthony; and two sisters, Elenore Harpenau and husband Donald, Chrisney, and Ann Voges and husband Sylvester, Ferdinand.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five br0thers, Richard, Edward, Alois, Urban, and Louis Bender, and two sisters, Irene Egloff and Alvina Flynn.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday and from 7-9:30 a.m. Friday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Online condolences can be shared at A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Ferdinand Church followed by burial in the church cemetery. Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 will conduct military graveside rites.
