Car vs. Train Collision

Duff (NNDC) – A 64 year old Velpen resident was very lucky Wednesday after their car collided with a Norfolk Southern train.  Shelly Schwenk of Velpen was driving her 2015 BMW X4 passenger vehicle  Northbound on Co Rd 600 W.    A Norfolk Southern Train with 85 cars and 3 engines was Eastbound.  The train had a total length of 5323 feet and was mostly empty coal hopper cars.     Train  speed is thought to have been 35-40 MPH.  The crossing did have functioning signals at the time of the collision.    Schwenk entered the crossing just after the lead engine passed and struck a the lead engine in the side.   Schwenk was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital as a precautionary measure.   The  roadway was closed for about one hour while the crash was investigated.

Luckily for Schwenk there were no apparent injuries but her vehicle was a total loss.  No damage was done to the Norfolk Southern Train.

The Dubois county sheriff’s department was on the scene to investigate the collision.
