The 40th anniversary Strassenfest opened Thursday with lots of tradition, fun, and excitement.

New additions were introduces to this years event including aringing of a bell and lighting of a lamp to signify the official opening.  The lighting of the lamp is an age old tradition from Germany, predating electricity as a means to bring light to the evening.

Another addition is the traditional maypole dance by children winding around the maypole with colored ribbon, an additional touch was music on stage with a German theme during the opening itself.
