James R. “Jim” Berg, 91, Jasper

James R. “Jim” Berg, 91, of Jasper, died Tuesday (July 3) at Cathedral Health Care in Jasper. He was born in Troy January 31, 1927, to Gilbert and Marie (Grass) Berg. He married Bettye J. Pfau June 22, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. She died March 2, 2011.

Jim was a United States Army veteran and served in Japan during World War II. He was the office manager at Breidenbaugh’s in Jasper for 50 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Jasper Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 147, and VFW Post 673. He enjoyed travelling, gardening, yardwork, grilling, music, bowling, and spending time with family.

He is survived by three daughters, Shelley Otto and Jeryl Luegers and Lisa Siebert and husband John, all of Jasper, and Melanie Berg and Maureen McCune, Greenwood; two sons, Michael Berg, Chicago, and Marty Berg and Joey Mateo, San Francisco, California; grandchildren Leslie Otto, Jasper, Nick Otto and fiancé Emily Mendel, Lexington, Kentucky, and Nathan Berg and wife Liz and Theresa Rekruciak and husband Brian, all of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Jack Berg; one sister, Rosemarie Gramelspacher, Jasper; and one brother, John L. Berg and wife Liz, Columbia, South Carolina.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one son, Mark Berg, one brother, Bill Berg, and one sister, Marjorie Curtin.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church or to a favorite charity. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. VFW Post No. 673 will conduct military graveside rites.
