River Improvements in Jasper near the Mill:

Jasper is planning to remove the collected sediment pile in the Patoka River near the Jasper City Mill.

The Board of Public Works approved City Engineer Chad Hurm to seek quotes for the construction of a toe wood shelf on the west side of the dam. The shelf will reinforce the riverbank — which has been eroding away — and narrow the width of the channel in the area to 80 feet, which is the width of the river up and downstream from the dam. Currently, the channel at the mill is about 130 feet wide.

Currently, there is no set timeline for the project, but Hurm expects work to begin sometime in July. The timeline is unknown as it will depend on weather and the flow of the river, as well as the other projects going on in the area. Hurm said the city is also working with the Army Corps of Engineers at Patoka Reservoir on how to manage the river flow while the work is being done.
