Dubois County (NNDC):

The Jasper School Board met on Monday, highlights below:

– Discussed school safety with plans to review coordination with local law enforcement agencies for tactical planning for emergency situations and pinpointing areas of weaknesses.  They also announced a smart phone app called “School Guard” which acts as an alert for staff members in the event of an armed intruder.

– Work has begun at the site of the future Jasper Elementary School. The facility’s building site is currently under constructed and is progressing nicely.

– Approved several new appointments to the school staff due to resignations and retirements as well as changes to the school calendar.

State Troopers Promoted:

Two troopers from the Indiana State Police Jasper Post have been promoted to detective.



Master Trooper Charles Pirtle and Trooper Michael Allen received their new assignments from Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter last week.

Pirtle is a Crawford County native and 16-year veteran of the Indiana State Police, having graduated from the 62nd Indiana State Police Recruit Academy in December 2001. After graduation, Pirtle was assigned to the Lafayette Post before transferring home to the Jasper Post in 2003.

He is experienced in underwater search-and-rescue diving, honor guard services, emergency vehicle operations, marijuana eradication coordinator, and methamphetamine suppression coordinator.

Pirtle graduated from the Eastern Seaboard Divers Academy, as a certified diver after completing 720 hours of training.  During his three years of military service, he spent 17 months deployed to Korea.

Allen is an Orange County native and a 5 year veteran of the Indiana State Police, graduating  from the Indiana State Police Academy in Dec. 12, 2012. After graduation, he was assigned to the Jasper Post where he patrolled mostly in Orange County.

He is trained as a hostage crisis negotiator, honor guard rifleman, field training officer, and is currently in training to become a certified drug recognition expert.

He was district Trooper of the Year in 2014 and 2017 and was the 2017 Indiana State Police Trooper of the Year, which was an honor covering all 14 ISP districts throughout the state.  He is also an honorably-discharged veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

New Business Coming to Jasper:

Jimmy Johns to Open Shop in Jasper

Jimmy Johns sandwich shop is coming to Jasper.  Jasper Lumber has announced that they’ll be doing work for the new business located near the Family Video store.

A completion date has not yet been set.  The company’s head office is located in Illinois.

Fireworks for Thunder over Patoka:

This Saturday the 11th annual Thunder Over Patoka will be held at Patoka Lake.  Fireworks begin at 10 p.m. and are not being held on the 4th of July as is falls on a weekday.

Fireworks will begin around  dark. Enjoy the show with family and friends, and bring lawn chairs, blankets, refreshments, and bug spray.  The display can be seen from areas around the beach as well as from Camp Ground C.

There is an entrance fee of $7 per vehicle for Indiana residents ($9 out of state) is required for the Newton Stewart State Recreation Area, Patoka Reservoir, located north of Wickliffe Indiana, Highway 164.For more information regarding this program or other interpretive events, call the Nature Center at 812.685.2447.
